Looking at this thread, I need some convincing from you guys should I ditch TrueNAS. Long time TrueNAS Core user, I know unRAID existed but did not consider due to the features. Is there something else that creates a high entry requirement? ZFS can really use a lot of RAM but I don't think that it is required. That eliminates old processors (pre-Haswell) and some less-old "cost reduced" processors (like less old Celerons). I think that they demanded that the CPU includes AES hardware. Many say that those chips are inferior, but many computers have them due to their low cost. I vaguely remember that they didn't support Realtek ethernet chips. That may mean that random consumer PCs have a significant chance of including an unsupported device.

I don't actually have first-hand knowledge, but my impression is that you can run TrueNAS on small machines but you get benefits from larger ones.Īt the lower tiers, they use FreeBSD so I imagine that they don't have device drivers for everything. Basically if you are not using any commercial grade hardware, you are totally on your own.
